ASHLAND – The College of Idaho women’s team put itself in position to win a fifth consecutive team title at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships presented by U.S. Bank, bringing its total to 146 for a 74-point lead Friday on Day 1 at Raider Stadium.

The Yotes hogged the throws points and won four events overall, while second-place Southern Oregon scored 72 points with four titles of its own, including a new meet record in the 4x100-meter relay. Oregon Tech sits in third place with 68 points, and Corban is in fourth with 67.

Eastern Oregon’s Harley McBride highlighted the individual efforts with her fourth high-jump championship, and Northwest Christian’s Shea Vallaire won the 10K for the second time in three years.

Below is a recap of the events in the order they unfolded:

Hammer: As expected, C of I dominated with the top four placers – Claire Otero (157-2), Hayley Morse (155-3), Brooklyn Daylong (141-1) and Kanessa Uta (140-8). Otero notched a season best by over seven feet, and Morse placed second for the second year in a row.

High Jump: EOU’s Harley McBride became the first four-time women’s long jump champion in CCC history by clearing 5-3 on her first try at it. Her teammate, Paige Dodd, was the runner-up at 5-1, becoming All-CCC in a second event after winning the heptathlon a couple weeks ago, and Corban’s Lindsay Asplund (4-11) took third.

3K Steeplechase: C of I’s Tamika Russell eased to a 15-second upset as the No. 2 seed with a time of 11:16.69, improving on her third-place finish in 2016, and SOU’s Bree Weber (11:31.60) pulled into second place. NCU’s Michelle Fletcher (11:38.78), running for the first time in a month as the top seed, already had the No. 4 time in the NAIA and was All-CCC for the second year in a row.

Shot Put: The Yotes filled the top four in a second throws discipline as Hayley Morse (40-10 ¾) defended her title, Brooklyn Daylong (41-0 ¼) earned All-CCC honors in a second event and Kiara Skinner (40-4 ¾) placed third in her first year of competition. Kabre Madrigal (39-5 ¼) and Corban’s Crystal Lynch (39-3 ¼) rounded out the top five.

4x100 Meters: Thanks to a set of clean handoffs, SOU captured the title for the first time since 2006 with a time of 47.07 seconds that crushed its own school record (47.74) established earlier last year and Concordia’s CCC Championship record (47.20) established in 2010. The Raiders’ quartet of Rakayla Tyler, Arianna Daniel, Margot Hamman and Savannah Greenwade went to No. 8 on the NAIA list. They were followed by EOU (48.35) and OIT (49.09).

Long Jump: SOU senior Lauren McGowne, who won the title as a freshman in 2014, claimed her second as a senior with a best of 18-2 ½ on her final attempt. For the seond year in a row, EOU sophomore Morgan Reddington secured runner-up status at 17-9 – the Mountaineers also had the sixth-place finisher, Victoria Branch (16-9 ¾) – and Northwest’s Michelle Perez (17-4 ¾) was third.

1,500 Meters: SOU junior Jessa Perkinson – among a field of seven indoor, outdoor or cross-country All-Americans – grabbed her second CCC title (the first was in the 5K last year) to avenge a runner-up finish in the 1,500 in 2016. She edged her teammate, sophomore Kayle Blackmore (40:40.85), who hit a personal best to easily outdo the No. 9 seed with which she entered. A pair of seniors, C of I’s Lila Klopfenstein (4:42.60) NCU’s Macie Gale (4:45.43), checked in at third and fourth.

100-Meter Hurdles: Nine of the top 10 finishers were underclassmen, led by champion Kami Hawkins, a sophomore from C of I who gave the Yotes their sixth win in seven years in the event with a time of 15.09 as the No. 5 seed. OIT senior Kara Wood (15.14) was runner-up for the second straight year, and EOU’s Haley Wood (15.19) turned in an All-CCC run.

400 Meters: SOU got a win out of freshman Arianna Daniel in 58.26, beating out OIT’s Amber Von Essen (58.80) in the fast heat. In the slow heat, though, SOU wild card Rakayla Tyler clocked the third-fastest overall time (59.20) in her first crack at the 400 this season.

10,000 Meters: After not racing last season, 2015 champion Shea Vallaire of NCU cruised to her second title by 40 seconds in 37:12.13, improving what was already the No. 2 time in the NAIA. Filling in behind her were three Yotes: Ashtyn Ellis (37:52.18), Emily Hagwood (38:25.99) and Kaitlyn Schut (38:31.11).
