Concordia’s Eckler Named Newcomer of the Year; Simonetti, Ziesemer Share Coach of the Year Honor

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Audrey Sullivan of Corban University and Concordia University’s Sam Johnson have been selected the women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, as announced by the conference office.

Sullivan, a 5-foot-9 senior forward from Puyallup, Wash., led her Corban (11-6-3, 6-2-1 CCC) teammates to a second-place finish behind CCC Champion and NAIA No. 1-ranked Concordia University. Sullivan was tops in the CCC in scoring with 45 points, including a CCC-high 17 goals. Her six game-winning goals were also the most in the CCC.

Concordia’s Samantha (Sam) Johnson led the stingiest defense in NAIA soccer. The Cavs (17-1-1, 9-0 CCC) allowed an NAIA-low six goals in their 19 matches this season and gave up just three tallies in their nine matches against CCC foes. Another mark of their miserly defense is Caviler goal keeper Olivia Brock’s NAIA-leading 0.19 goals against average, allowing just two goals in 965 minutes in goal.

For the fourth season in a row a freshman is named Newcomer of the Year award with Concordia University midfielder Bobbi Eckler was so honored by the conference coaches. The 5-foot-6 Vancouver, Wash. native tallied 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) on the season and ranked fifth in the conference in shots per game with 3.05.

Head coaches Jen Simonetti of Eastern Oregon University and Corban University’s Marty Ziesemer will share the 2013 CCC Coach of the Year award.

Simonetti, in just her second season with the Mountaineers (9-5-1, 5-4 CCC), turned around a dismal 1-13-2 inaugural season in 2012 to capture fifth place and securing EOU’s second-ever postseason appearance. Last appearance in the CCC playoffs for Eastern Oregon was 2006.

In his seventeenth season at the helm of the Warriors, Ziesemer is collecting his third CCC Coach of the Year honor. This season’s 11 victories equals the second most for the Corban program since capturing 17 victories in 2010.
