PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia’s men’s cross country team, which captured the Charles Bowles Invitational team title in Salem Saturday for its third consecutive meet crown, has been named the recipient of the CCC’s Verizon Team of the Week award, the conference office announced.
Ranked fifth nationally, Concordia tallied a team score of 85 points to edge No. 10-ranked Lewis-Clark State (92).
The Cavs were led by newcomer Matthew Clowes and sophomore Ben Foubert. Clowes clocked in at 24:36.32 to pace the Cavaliers, as he finished fifth overall among collegians. Foubert quickly followed in seventh with a time of 24:44.64.
Shadowing each other for much of the race, Cory Pena (19th, 25:15.91) and Marcus Nelson (21st, 25:17.49) finished as CU’s third and fourth runners, respectively, while Andrew Landstrom gave the Cavs their final scorer in 33rd place with a time of 25:31.05.
Jasen Brown, in his first race for CU, placed 53rd with a 26:04.64, while Brandon Schmuckley placed 78th with a 26:31.17 to round out the CU contingent.
“This meet was a great practice for a national type of event,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We are still working through a couple of injuries, but we had a great overall team effort today, especially with Ben (Foubert) and Andrew (Landstrom) running huge personal records.”
The Cavs’ top five runners averaged a time of 25:05.09. In comparison, the University of Portland, ranked No. 11 in NCAA DI, averaged a 24:32.32 en route to winning the ‘Cardinal’ section of the Charles Bowles Invitational.
